Getting Started with AI Roleplay

Everything you need to go from zero to your first immersive scene in under ten minutes. Follow the five steps below, and you'll be roleplaying like a pro before you finish your coffee.

Create Your Account

Head to the sign-up page and choose an email-and-password combo or sign in with a social account. The whole process takes under a minute — no credit card required for free-tier access. Make sure the email address is one you actually check, because that's where password-reset links and feature updates land. Once you confirm your email, your dashboard unlocks immediately.

Pro tip

Use a dedicated email alias (e.g. yourname+roleplay@gmail.com) if you want to keep your inbox tidy. It routes to the same mailbox but lets you filter notifications into their own folder automatically.

Browse or Create a Character

The character library is the heart of the experience. You can scroll the curated roster — each card shows a personality snapshot, a conversation style tag, and a preview of the character's backstory. If nothing clicks, open the character creator and build someone from scratch: pick traits, a voice style, and a visual persona. Characters you create are private by default, so experiment freely.

Pro tip

Start with a curated character for your very first session. Custom characters are powerful, but they shine once you understand how tone settings and memory depth actually affect the conversation flow.

Set Your First Scene

A scene is the stage direction that tells the AI where you are, what's happening, and what the emotional temperature is. Choose from premade scenarios — a candlelit dinner, an accidental encounter, a late-night phone call — or write your own one-liner. The more specific you are, the sharper the AI's opening move will be. Don't stress about perfection; you can redirect the scene at any time by sending a new scene prompt mid-conversation.

Pro tip

Include at least one sensory detail in your scene prompt ('the rain drumming on the window', 'a crowded jazz bar'). Concrete imagery anchors the AI's writing and produces more vivid, atmospheric responses from the very first message.

Start Your Conversation

Hit 'Start' and the character opens with a message shaped by the scene you set. From here, it's a back-and-forth exchange: you type, the character responds in-character. Want to steer things in a new direction? Just say so naturally — the AI picks up on tone shifts, direct requests, and even out-of-character notes wrapped in parentheses. Early conversations are the best time to discover what kind of writing style you enjoy before you fine-tune later.

Pro tip

If a response feels off, tap the 'regenerate' button instead of starting over. The AI produces a fresh take on the same prompt, and often the second or third variant nails the tone you were after.

Level Up — Voice, Photos & Memory

Once you're comfortable with text chat, explore the premium layer. Voice mode lets you hear the character speak with an expressive, AI-generated voice — ideal for immersive scenes where reading breaks the spell. Photo generation adds visual context: request a portrait, a scene illustration, or a mood image mid-conversation and it arrives in seconds. Memory features mean the character remembers past sessions, inside jokes, and relationship milestones, building genuine continuity across weeks or months of interaction.

Pro tip

Enable memory early, even if you're on the free tier. The character starts logging key moments from day one, so by the time you upgrade, there's already a rich history to draw on instead of starting from zero.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Knowing what to avoid saves you more time than knowing what to do. Here are the four pitfalls we see most often from new users.

Writing one-word replies

The AI mirrors your energy. If you send 'ok' or 'sure', expect equally flat responses. Give the AI something to work with — a reaction, an action, an emotion — and the quality of the dialogue jumps immediately. Two to three sentences per message is the sweet spot for a natural, flowing conversation.

Ignoring scene-setting entirely

Skipping the scene prompt is like asking an actor to perform without a stage. The AI will still respond, but it defaults to a generic, directionless opener. Spending thirty seconds on a scene — even a single sentence — dramatically improves how grounded and immersive the first exchange feels.

Switching characters every five minutes

Each new character starts with a blank memory. If you keep hopping, you never give any single persona time to develop nuance, learn your preferences, or build the kind of history that makes later sessions genuinely surprising. Stick with one character for at least three full conversations before deciding whether to move on.

Treating the AI like a search engine

The AI is built for narrative and emotion, not factual lookups. Asking 'what's the capital of France?' mid-scene breaks immersion and produces awkward in-character answers. Keep information requests for real search engines and let the roleplay channel do what it does best: tell a story with you.
